The sports physical exam helps determine whether it's safe for you to participate in a particular sport. Most states actually require that kids and teens have a sports physical before they can start a new sport or begin a new competitive season.
The sports physical includes a detailed evaluation of the medical history and a thorough physical exam. The medical history portion includes questions about previous illness of both patient or family members, previous hospitalizations or surgeries, allergies, past injuries, current medications, etc. The physical exam provides the opportunity for the physician to evaluate the condition of the individual as it pertains to the sport they will be participating in.
